What Is Happening To My...... by Knollwood on June 8, 2010 at 12:00pm Sorry about the picture: like most gardeners, we prefer the beautiful parts of gardening. But this is nature, and nature ain't always pretty!
This is an example of Blossom End Rot. It is a calcium deficiency most common in tomatoes, especially those grown in containers, but may also be seen in peppers, eggplant, and a few others as well. The disorder is not the end of the world,... Late Potato/Tomato Blight by Knollwood on July 7, 2009 at 12:00pm Photo from Cornell University
In the past week, there has been a lot of media coverage of the Late Potato Blight, which also affects tomatoes. We do not feel that is a threat to home gardeners in our area in most circumstances. The disease has been tracked to some Bonny Plants brand plants, which are shipped to big box stores. Locally grown tomato plants have shown no signs of the disease; the only concern to local growers would be if a neighbor purchased a shipped-in plant from out of state and the spores of the disease were windborne. No local cases have been positively identified. If, after reviewing these photos and descriptions, you believe you may have a case of the blight, please take a sample in a sealed ziplock bag to your local County Extension Office for identification and monitoring. Their contact information can be found on our "Links" page.
The following are websites with detailed information and photos of the problem:

Hartford Courant... World's First Seedless Tomato! by Terri@Knollwood on March 30, 2009 at 12:00pm This is truly an exciting introduction: a virtually seedless tomato! We don't think we can describe it any better than this excerpt from Burpee themselves:

Beyond the lack of seeds to digest, this tomato is first rate for taste. In fact, precisely because there are no seeds to store the sugars for later use, all the sweetness is immediately available for you to enjoy in every rich slice. This is a totally new tomato on every level...Dreaming of Spring.... by Knollwood on January 9, 2009 at 12:00am The ground may be frozen, we can see our breath in the air, and the best place to be is curled up warm inside, but that doesn't stop us from dreaming of spring. So grab a cup of cocoa and your magazines, and start planning this year's garden!
Here are some hints of what you can do now:... Hot Hot Hot: Bhut Jolokia Peppers by Knollwood on May 16, 2008 at 12:00am Recently recognized by the Guiness Book of World Records as the World's Hottest Pepper, the Bhut Jolokia is taking the pepper-eating world by (fire)storm. 200 times hotter than the jalapeno, it is almost indescribable how this pepper can affect you! Knollwood Garden Center is growing a limited number of these plants if you would like to try one this year, but... |
