Flying Flowers 2011
Some bugs are creepy and destructive, but some, like the butterfly capture our fancy and delight us. Likewise, hummingbirds are lovely and amusing in a way that the common crow will never be. Observing the complete lifecycle of a butterfly play out in your garden is an education and fun to share with children, and the passionate fights over territory that dapper hummers wage happen at a dizzying speed. There are several simple things you can do to attract these creatures to your garden: 1. Provide a colorful buffet of their favorite flowers for nectar, as well as some that the caterpillars enjoy. 2. Maintain a shallow water source. 3. Avoid using pesticides, particulary on their favorites. 4. Provide a hummingbird feeder, cleaning and refilling it frequently. For plant lists and more tips on hosting these creatures, view/print our brochures on butterflies and hummingbirds, or pick up a copy the next time you are in to visit.
